Hoyer: Raise the Wage Act Will Help Grow Our Economy, Make the American Dream More Attainable
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the introduction of the Raise the Wage Act, of which he is an original co-sponsor, to raise the federal minimum wage to $12 by 2020:
“I am proud to cosponsor a bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020. The current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour is certainly not enough to make ends meet or raise a family today. Americans overwhelmingly support raising the minimum wage – as do many businesses – because, in the wealthiest nation on Earth, nobody who works hard and takes responsibility ought to have to straddle the poverty line. A higher minimum wage will help more people not only stay afloat financially but start to get ahead.
“Democrats will continue to defend the principle that hard work ought to lead to opportunities to achieve the American Dream. Raising the minimum wage will help make that dream more attainable and help grow our economy. I hope Republicans will work with us to bring this legislation up for a vote in both chambers and send it to the President’s desk for his signature.”
