Hoyer Statement on the Forty-Fifth Earth Day WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Earth Day: “Forty-five years ago, Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day as an opportunity to recommit ourselves to environmental responsibility and stewardship. Today, we take a moment to reflect on the work that’s been done to make our planet a cleaner and more sustainable place for future generations, while recognizing there is far more work ahead. “The challenges we continue to face from climate change and pollution are great. Congress has an important role to play in environmental protection and conservation, and I will continue to encourage bipartisan efforts to invest in cleaner energy technologies, reduce carbon emissions in a responsible way, preserve natural resources, and safeguard endangered species. “As we mark Earth Day 2015, let us never lose sight of the lesson Senator Nelson imparted on that first Earth Day in 1970 when he said: ‘Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality, and mutual respect for all other human beings and all living creatures.’ Today, it is our turn to lead the effort to achieve that vision and watch over the Earth we all share.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources.
