Hoyer Statement on House Republicans’ First 100 Days in the 114th Congress
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the 100th day of the Republican-led 114th Congress:
“Today marks the 100th day of the 114th Congress, and the Republican Majority’s record of dysfunction and partisanship has been deeply disappointing for the American people. While Republicans have a responsibility to show that they can govern as the Majority party in both the House and Senate, they have instead wasted these past fifteen weeks on political messaging bills and have struggled with their own internal division. From nearly shutting down the Department of Homeland Security over unrelated, anti-immigrant policies to struggling to pass their own partisan, unworkable budget, they have failed to govern responsibly and make progress on behalf of the American people. In fact, over the past hundred days, the Republican-controlled House has passed just six major pieces of legislation, and only three of these have been signed into law – all of which were bills to continue basic functions of government, such as funding the Department of Homeland Security. At the same time, they have been forced to pull their ESEA reauthorization bill, legislation attacking women’s rights, and a partisan border policy bill from the Floor as a result of intra-party division.
“While our economy continues to recover, many American workers and their families have yet to feel the benefits of the recovery in their own lives, which is where Congress’s focus should be. Just as Congress did when we passed a bipartisan bill to permanently fix the broken Medicare SGR formula and reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program, we ought to work across the aisle to address other pressing challenges that demand bipartisan solutions, such as supporting job creation and taking action on issues that will help hard-working families get ahead.
“Congress can – and must – do better, and Democrats will continue to hold the Majority accountable for their inaction. It is never too late for Republicans to do the right thing and partner with Democrats to invest in our nation’s future, promote long-term economic competiveness, and help more of our people achieve the American Dream.”
