Hoyer Statement on Corker, Cardin Agreement
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the compromise amendment introduced today by Senators Bob Corker (R-TN) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) on Congress's role in reviewing any final agreement with Iran, which was unanimously approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this afternoon:
“I am pleased that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has unanimously approved a compromise reached by Senators Cardin and Corker that the Administration has said would be signed if passed by Congress. I believe that Congress has a responsibility to review any final agreement with Iran, and this bill will achieve that goal – setting up a carefully-constructed review period to ensure that a deal meets expectations and prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. As the Administration has confirmed, a final agreement with Iran must include a robust and transparent inspections regime, deal with militarization, and dismantle Iran’s nuclear arms infrastructure. Secretary Kerry has made it clear that any agreement must not be based on trust but on strict verification.
“The Administration has continued to keep Congress informed as it continues to negotiate with Iran on a final agreement. I want to thank Secretaries Kerry, Moniz, and Lew for providing in-depth briefings to Members of the House and Senate. This is a highly technical process, one that requires careful analysis and oversight, and I look forward to reviewing any final agreement once presented to Congress.”
