Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Senator Harry Reid
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced he will not seek reelection in 2016:
“For nearly three decades, Harry Reid has brought to the United States Senate his intellect, his principled leadership, and his indefatigable approach to public service. I’ve known Harry for over fifty years and have had the privilege of working closely with him throughout my years in the House leadership and of serving with him in the House during his two terms representing Nevada’s First District. Throughout that time, I have seen firsthand his tireless ethic and his love for the people of Nevada and of our country.
“The son of a miner and laundry worker raised in a home with no running water in the remote desert town of Searchlight, Harry never forgot his humble roots as he worked to create jobs and opportunities that help lift Americans out of poverty and into the middle class. As a former U.S. Capitol Police officer, helping to guard the Capitol back when I was a staffer and when both Harry and I were in law school, he always recognized the sacrifices and service of law enforcement agents and first responders. He fought corruption as a young attorney and state official before his election to Congress. Guided by his deep Mormon faith, Harry has stood firm on the side of justice and equality for all Americans.
“In the Senate, one of Harry’s first acts was to sponsor legislation creating the Great Basin National Park, and in the years since he has worked in a bipartisan way to preserve millions of acres of wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, and public lands in Nevada and across the country. He moved a comprehensive immigration reform bill through the Senate in 2013 – a historic achievement that I hope will be repeated by both chambers this Congress. Throughout his service as Majority Leader, he has been tough as nails, leading efforts to defend against extreme, partisan bills passed by the Republican-controlled House that would undermine women’s rights, undo protections for workers, and disinvest in America’s future.
“I will be sad to see Harry leave the institution he has worked so hard to strengthen, but I join in wishing him, Landra, and their family all the best as he prepares to retire at the end of this term. I look forward to continue working closely with him over the next two years to fight for greater security and prosperity for our country.”
