Hoyer Statement on the Reintroduction of the Paycheck Fairness Act WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the reintroduction of the Paycheck Fairness Act, of which he is an original co-sponsor: “I’m pleased to join with Rep. Rosa DeLauro and other House Democrats to reintroduce the Paycheck Fairness Act today in the 114th Congress, and I thank Senator Barbara Mikulski for reintroducing it in the Senate. I was proud to serve as Majority Leader when we enacted the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and this critical legislation would build on that progress by ending wage discrimination against women and promoting higher wages and the growth of opportunities to help more Americans secure a place in the middle class. “It is shameful that in the year 2015, women, many of whom serve as primary breadwinners for their households, average just $0.78 to every dollar a man earns for the same work. We must close remaining loopholes that make it difficult for employees to share salary information with one another and that limit the remedies available to women who sue for pay discrimination. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Rep. DeLauro and other supporters of this legislation to push for the Paycheck Fairness Act to receive timely consideration in the House. I hope Republicans will end their opposition to this important equal rights bill and work with Democrats to enact it into law this Congress.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources.
