Hoyer Statement on House Republicans' Partisan Border Bill WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today after House Republican leaders announced they are bringing an extreme, partisan border bill to the Floor next week for a vote: "I am very disappointed that the House Republican Majority plans to bring to the Floor next week legislation that would undermine efforts to achieve comprehensive immigration reform, and I will be whipping against it. Republicans took what was a bipartisan bill in the 113th Congress and have now transformed it into a partisan one, which militarizes our southwestern border and denies Homeland Security officials the flexibility required to address existing and new challenges along that border, while doing nothing to improve security in other border areas. Once again, Republicans are demonstrating how out of touch they are with the American people, who overwhelmingly support a comprehensive approach to fixing our broken immigration system. "Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee were unified last night in opposing this legislation after their Republican counterparts refused to allow amendments to improve the bill. I urge the Speaker and Majority Leader to pull it from the calendar and instead take action on bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform legislation similar to what passed the Senate in 2013. We need to work together to enact reform that will keep families together, provide a pathway to citizenship, secure our borders, and contribute to growing our economy and reducing the deficit."
