Hoyer Statement on the Importance of Restoring Protections of the Voting Rights Act WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the importance of restoring protections of the Voting Rights Act following comments made by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte: “I am deeply concerned and disappointed by comments from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte that Congress does not need to take corrective action to address the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in Shelby v Holder, which guts one of the most important and effective provisions ever enacted to combat voter discrimination. This ought to be of very serious concern for everyone who cherishes the fundamental right of every American to vote and participate equally in our democracy. “As we prepare to commemorate the 50th anniversaries of the march in Selma and the enactment of the Voting Rights Act, it would be a blow against the march toward fairness and equality at the ballot box for Congress to do nothing to address the Shelby decision. I urge the Chairman – along with the Speaker and the Majority Leader – to allow the bipartisan process led by Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner and Judiciary Ranking Member John Conyers to restore the Voting Rights Act’s full protections to move forward unhindered.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
