U.S. stocks open sharply higher; Dow jumps 230 points
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. stock market opened sharply higher on Tuesday, rebounding from two days of losses. Better-than-expected data on small-business optimism as well as hopes that the European Central Bank might implement quantitative easing soon lifted stocks ahead of the regular market open. The S&P 500 opened up 23 points, or 1.1%, at 2,051. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 234 points, or 1.3%, to 17,875 at the open. The Nasdaq Composite began the day up 58 points, or 1.3%, at 4,722.
