Hoyer Statement on December Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for December:
“Since President Obama took office, our nation has seen a jobs recovery that has created nearly 11 million jobs over fifty-eight consecutive months of private sector job growth. Today’s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics adds to that record, showing that 240,000 private sector jobs were created in December, dropping the unemployment rate to 5.6%. Our economy has the right ingredients to expand job growth even further, especially in the critical area of manufacturing, and it is up to Congress to build on the gains we’ve experienced and work together in a bipartisan way to invest in making America the best place to locate a business and hire workers for jobs that pay well and offer good benefits.
“The Republican Majority in the 114th Congress has an opportunity to put partisanship aside and work with Democrats to focus on the issues that matter most: creating jobs, growing a strong economy, and ensuring that American workers can see their wages rise. The House ought to take up legislation that invests in infrastructure, education, and innovation – and that helps businesses export more of their products overseas. At the same time, Congress must not create additional uncertainty for private sector employers, which could reverse this progress, through continued brinksmanship and manufactured crises. Republicans should use today’s report – and the news that 2014 saw the highest job growth of any year since 1999 – as a call to work together to remove roadblocks to economic progress rather than reinforce them.
“I hope that the Republicans who now control both the House and Senate will recognize their responsibility to use their control of Congress to work with Democrats and the President to move our economic recovery forward. Our workers and businesses deserve a Congress that is on their side, not one that stands in their way.”
