U.S. stocks register largest gain in 3 weeks
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks ended Thursday with the biggest advance in three weeks, as two days of steady oil prices along with dovish comments by a Federal Reserve member pushed investors into buy mode. The benchmark S&P 500 and Dow industrials turned positive for the year, while a measure of volatility - CBOE Vix index - fell 11%, dropping below long-term average to 17. The S&P 500 closed up 36.21 points, or 1.8%, higher at 2,062.11. Materials, technology and energy sector stocks led the gains, adding more than 2% each. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 323.28 points, or 1.8%, to 17,907.80. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day with a gain of 85.72 points, or 1.8%, at 4,736.19.
