S&P 500, Dow industrials close at records
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Modest gains on Wall Street Monday pushed the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average to record closes. The main indexes booked their fourth straight day of gains, as investors continued to bet on an accommodative interest-rate policy from the Federal Reserve, after the central bank last week reassured investors it will be "patient" about the timing and pace of rate hikes. Trading volumes were low in a holiday-shortened week, while losses in energy sector stocks limited gains. The S&P 500 closed up nearly 8 points, or 0.38%, at 2,078.5. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 154.51 points, or 0.87%, to 17,959. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 16 points, or 0.34%, at 4,781.
