Hoyer Praises New Developments from the Legislative Branch Bulk Data Task Force
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement praising the Legislative Branch Bulk Data Task Force for the new developments that were announced yesterday at a public meeting in the Capitol building with members of the task force and interested members of the public:
“I’m pleased that the Senate is following the House’s lead in supporting the actions of the Bulk Data Task Force, which was created in a bipartisan effort in 2012 to make legislative data more open and accessible. I also applaud the additional announcements made yesterday from various Legislative Branch agencies that have been productive participants in the Bulk Data Task Force, including updates to the U.S. code online from the Office of Law Revision Counsel, updates to the new Congress.gov from the Library of Congress, and new data sets and online video from the Clerk of the House.
“I’d like to recognize Robert Reeves, the Deputy Clerk of the House of Representatives, who has done an outstanding job in leading the Bulk Data Task Force over the past two years, as well as the civil servants at legislative branch agencies who have helped move this effort forward. I hope that these efforts to modernize our shared systems and provide better public access will continue into the future.”
The goal of the task force is to open and modernize legislative branch data, allowing academics, developers, and civic activists to build new apps and programs to use legislative information in inventive new ways. The Obama Administration and many state and local governments are also making open government data a priority, enabling innovative websites and mobile apps.
