Hoyer Statement on Election Assistance Commission Confirmations WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after last night’s Senate confirmation of three commissioners to lead the Election Assistance Commission, which was established by the Help America Vote Act: “I am pleased that the Senate has finally confirmed three of the four commissioners to lead the Election Assistance Commission after a disturbingly long vacancy period. When I helped lead the effort to pass the Help America Vote Act in 2002, the bipartisan majority of those who voted to enact it sought to create an agency of professionals dedicated to the goal of improving the voting and registration experience for all Americans and preventing a repeat of the 2000 electoral debacle in Florida. “In an era when close elections are more and more the norm, Americans need to be able to trust that every eligible voter will have his or her vote counted and that no one is denied the right to exercise our most fundamental right. Critical to this effort is an Election Assistance Commission that is fully staffed and ready to do the work with which Congress has charged it. “When the 114th Congress convenes next month, I urge the Senate to confirm the nominee for the Commission’s remaining vacancy quickly so that it can operate at full strength and continue to make our elections more transparent and accountable.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
