Hoyer Statement on the Grand Jury Decision Regarding the Death of Michael Brown WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the grand jury decision regarding the death of Michael Brown: “Michael Brown’s death was tragic and preventable. We must do more as a nation to ensure that every individual and every life is valued and protected, no matter the color of one’s skin. I understand why the protestors in Ferguson, Missouri are angry and disappointed in the decision handed down last night, given the long history of justice denied in a nation that is supposed to uphold blind, equal justice under law. We cannot give up on our efforts to advance the cause of equality and justice. We should continue to work toward these goals as we have in the past – not through violence, but by coming together peacefully to engage in positive community action. When anger and despair is channeled into positive action – as Michael Brown’s parents have called for - we can achieve great change. “I will continue working with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus to push for measures both in and out of Congress to bring Americans together to make our justice system stronger and more equal. No family should ever have to endure the pain of losing a loved one in this tragic way again.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
