Democrats Continue to Urge Action on Immigration, Jobs, Other Priorities of the American People
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Yesterday, President Obama announced executive actions he will take to fix our nation’s broken immigration system. House Republicans have had over 500 days since the Senate passed their bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill, yet House Republican leaders refuse to put it on the House Floor for a vote. The steps the President will take to address this serious challenge will help secure the border, prioritize deporting felons instead of wrenching families apart, and make the entire system more accountable by ensuring that everyone plays by the same rules. While I support the President’s actions, which are well within his legal authority, they are no substitute for Congressional action and I urge my Republican colleagues in the House to work with us to pass a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform bill we can agree on.
In addition to fixing our broken immigration system, the American people also want their Representatives in Congress to work together to create jobs and expand economic opportunity. Unfortunately, House Republicans continue to waste time on partisan messaging bills disguised as jobs legislation. This week, they passed three bills that harm our environment and will not grow our economy. I encourage House Republicans to work with Democrats to move legislation from our Make It In America plan, which includes bills to strengthen American manufacturing, promote the export of U.S. goods, and reform the tax code so companies are encouraged to create more jobs here at home.
We also have significant issues we need to tackle during the remainder of the 113th Congress – including an omnibus appropriations bill to fund the government, a defense authorization measure, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act, and tax extenders. I will continue to urge my Republican colleagues to work with us to address these important issues before the end of the year so we can provide our economy with certainty.
