Hoyer Statement on August Jobs Report WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for September: “September’s jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that our economy added 236,000 private sector jobs, marking the fifty-fifth consecutive month of growth, and the unemployment rate fell to 5.9% - the first time it has dropped below 6% since July 2008. This is another indicator that our economy continues to improve after the deepest recession in a generation. “At the same time, Congress must take action to ensure this growth continues. I am disappointed that the Republican House Majority has squandered every opportunity to take meaningful action to help our economy become more competitive, spur manufacturing growth, and provide certainty to businesses so they can invest here with confidence. “At the same time, Democrats will continue to push forward with our Make It In America jobs plan and with our efforts to jump-start the middle class by raising the minimum wage, ensuring that women receive the equal pay they have earned, and facilitating greater access to quality education at every level. Congress should never tell Americans that they are on their own, which is exactly what this Republican Majority has done on these issues and others. Instead, our people deserve a Congress that is on their side." Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
