SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Co. reported Wednesday it sold 223,437 cars and light trucks in the United States in September, a 19.4% jump from its September 2013 sales. Retail sales to individual buyers rose 17% while fleet sales to commercial customers jumped 30%. The company cited strong demand for trucks and crossovers for the improved sales numbers. Among the top sellers, GM said Chevrolet deliveries rose 20%, with Silverado pickup sales up 54% and Suburban SUV sale up 50%. The company posted a 25% gain in commercial sales driven by pickups and vans, which rose, respectively, 6% and 46% from a year ago.
