Hoyer Statement on 9/11 Anniversary
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today commemorating the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001:
“Thirteen years ago, our nation was shaken by an attack that took the lives of 2,977 people and brought heartbreak to families and communities across the country and the world. In New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and throughout the country, survivors, loved ones, first responders, and those wishing to honor the victims and heroes will gather today in an affirmation that those lost will never be forgotten – and that we will always stand together as one nation to defend our homeland from those who would do us harm. We also take the opportunity today to thank and honor those who courageously ran toward danger on that day to save others’ lives as well as the brave men and women of our Armed Forces and first responders who have served on the front lines against terror since 2001, both overseas and here at home.
“Last night, in addressing the American people, President Obama spoke of the ‘enduring burden’ that accompanies our blessings of liberty and our nation’s role as a beacon of democracy and opportunity. The perpetrators of the September 11 attacks believed that Americans were not up to the task that history had given us – that their heinous act would cause us to shrink from the profound responsibility global leadership requires. Over the past thirteen years we have proven them wrong, as millions answered the call to serve at home and abroad, as communities rallied together, and as our nation reaffirmed its commitment to the values we hold dear. Over the years to come, we will surely continue to meet any threat and surmount any challenge, and I have no doubt that Americans will continue to draw strength from the heroism we witnessed on September 11, 2001, and forever remember that day not only for its pain but for its example of America’s enduring spirit.”
