Hoyer Statement on August Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for August:
“With stock markets climbing and recent economic growth strong, the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report for August shows that employers are still struggling with uncertainty exacerbated by gridlock in Congress and a Republican House Majority that refuses to work across the aisle in a serious effort to promote fiscal sustainability, invest in job growth, or make our tax code more competitive.
“While it is encouraging that 134,000 private sector jobs were created last month, marking fifty-four consecutive months of private sector job growth that has created over 10 million new jobs, we can – and must – do better. The way to do so is by working in a bipartisan way to advance Make It In America legislation that will grow domestic manufacturing, create jobs, and provide the education and training opportunities needed to secure a twenty-first century workforce. Make It In America bills draw on the best ideas from both parties and could pass with bipartisan majorities – if only the Speaker and Majority Leader would allow them to reach the Floor for votes.
“As Congress returns to Washington next week, House Democrats will continue to focus on job creation and expanding opportunities for American workers and their families by working to bring Make It In America bills to the Floor, starting with a multi-year reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank to help businesses sell more goods overseas. House Republicans have a choice in September: continue their obstructionist policies by blocking Make It In America legislation that helps expand our middle class or work with Democrats to tackle the most pressing challenges our country faces in a bipartisan way.”
