Hoyer Statement on HHS Announcement of Prescription Drug Savings Under Affordable Care Act WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Health and Human Services announced that 8.2 million seniors and Americans with disabilities have saved $11.5 billion on prescription drug costs due to the Affordable Care Act: “Today’s announcement that 8.2 million seniors and Americans with disabilities caught in the Medicare Part D ‘donut hole’ have now saved more than $11.5 billion on prescription drugs since 2010 is further proof that the Affordable Care Act is working as intended to help seniors save money and see their benefits improved. Seniors who are benefitting from the closing of the ‘donut hole’ have saved, on average, $1,407 per beneficiary, making a real difference in people’s lives. “The Affordable Care Act continues to yield benefits in cost savings, increased access, and an end to discriminatory practices. No longer can insurers arbitrarily drop enrollees when they become sick or deny adults or children coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Women cannot be charged higher premiums than men for the same coverage, as they routinely used to be. The law is slowing the growth of health care costs and is extending the solvency of Medicare. Democrats will continue to defend these critical reforms against attempts by House Republicans to repeal or undermine them.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
