Hoyer Statement on the 100th Anniversary of the Beginning of the First World War WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, which began on July 28, 1914: “As the world marks the centennial of the outbreak of the First World War today, I join in remembering the service and sacrifices of so many American military personnel who answered the call to fight on distant shores in defense of democracy and values we hold dear. Though the last veterans of that war are no longer with us, their heroism will always inspire us. Americans will never forget Belleau Wood, the Marne, and the Argonne Forest, where so many gave their lives, and where thousands now rest for eternity. Today, while the First World War may seem distant, its impact on our nation and the world continue to be felt. In recalling the heroism and tragedy of that conflict, let us draw strength for our own resolve to seek a world safer and freer for all people.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
