Hoyer Statement on President Obama's Remarks on Immigration Reform
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Obama’s remarks on immigration reform:
“It is unconscionable that Speaker Boehner and House Republicans have decided to block comprehensive immigration reform at least through the end of the year. This is an issue that deeply affects millions of families and businesses throughout our country, and a myriad of voices from across society, including our country’s leading innovators and many faith leaders, have called for action without further delay. With our economy standing to benefit greatly from the job creation and increased competitiveness that comprehensive immigration reform would bring, House Republicans’ abandonment of this bipartisan and commonsense effort is the wrong decision to make.
“I applaud President Obama’s efforts to use every administrative tool at his disposal to address our immigration challenge. However, these executive actions are no substitute for Congress doing its job and working together to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation. I look forward to working closely with the Administration and with all stakeholders, including those in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and many other Democratic Members who have been leaders on this issue, to continue pushing for Congress to take action.
“The Senate has already acted, passing a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill last June, and the House has had plenty of opportunity to follow suit. I am proud to have cosponsored bipartisan legislation in the House – H.R. 15 – that would bring millions of undocumented immigrants out of the shadows, fix our broken visa system, secure our borders, boost our economy by creating jobs and spurring innovation, and reduce deficits by hundreds of billions of dollars over the long term. It is not too late for the House to act. I call on Speaker Boehner and House Republicans to reconsider their position and to work with Democrats and with the Administration to bring a comprehensive immigration reform bill to the Floor before the 113th Congress adjourns.”
