Hoyer Statement on One Year Anniversary of Supreme Court Decision in Shelby County v. Holder WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court decison in Shelby County v. Holder, which removed key voter protections: “On this day last year, the Supreme Court set back the cause of equal voting rights in America in its terrible decision striking down a key part of the 1964 Voting Rights Act. In the year since, we’ve seen several Republican-led states impose new voting restrictions. The result has been the effective disenfranchisement of minority groups who deserve an equal voice in our democracy but, instead, are having their voices silenced. “This situation must be remedied, and I am proud to have joined in a bipartisan effort along with Civil Rights leader Rep. John Lewis, Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, and other concerned Members to introduce the Voting Rights Amendment Act. Our legislation would restore the voter protections that the Supreme Court ruling in Shelby v. Holder removed. The right to vote is fundamental to our democratic system of government, and our nation is strongest when every citizen participates in choosing its leaders. The Senate is holding a hearing on this bill today, and I am calling on Democrats and Republicans in the House to work together to follow suit and advance the Voting Rights Amendment Act to the Floor without delay.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
