Hoyer Statement on the 70th Anniversary of the G.I. Bill of Rights WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the 70th anniversary of the enactment of the G.I. Bill of Rights: “I join in marking the seventieth anniversary of the enactment of the G.I. Bill, which helped millions of veterans of the Second World War afford higher education, attain homeownership, and train for civilian jobs in the post-war economy. Those who courageously defended freedom abroad were able to take advantage of the G.I. Bill to pursue opportunity at home. “I was incredibly proud to have helped enact the New G.I. Bill when I was Majority Leader in 2009, extending new support for those who answered the call to serve after the attacks of September 11, 2001, including the many who deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. It made it possible for them to pursue many of the same opportunities granted to their predecessors, helping not only to ease their transition home but to enable them to apply their dedication and talents to the mission of growing a stronger economy and expanding America’s middle class. We must continue to keep faith with those who have served us in uniform, and I look forward to continuing to work in a bipartisan way to support those who have put their lives on the line to protect our nation and its interests abroad.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
