Hoyer Statement on the 51st Anniversary of the Equal Pay Act WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the 51st anniversary of the Equal Pay Act being signed into law: “Fifty-one years ago today, President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act, landmark legislation that made it illegal for employers to pay women less than men for the same work. At the time, women earned only $0.60 to the dollar of a man’s salary, yet today the pay gap has only narrowed to $0.77 to the dollar. With millions of families relying on women’s incomes to make ends meet – and with women serving as primary breadwinners for more households than ever before – closing this gap has never been more important. That’s why House Democrats have made equal pay a priority, passing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009 and now pushing for Congress to enact the Paycheck Fairness Act, which I am proud to cosponsor. As we mark this anniversary, I urge House Republicans to partner with Democrats to do the right thing and take steps to close the pay gap once and for all.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
