NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. stock market closed marginally higher on Tuesday, after retreating from intraday highs set in early morning trade. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record levels for the second straight day. The Dow rose for the fifth consecutive session and closed 19.97 points, or 0.1%, higher at 16,715.44. The S&P 500 finished less than a point higher at 1,897.45. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day down 13.69 points, or 0.3%, at 4,130.17.
