Hoyer: U.S. National Climate Assessment Is A Call to Action
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to the third U.S. National Climate Assessment released by the White House earlier today:
“The release today of the third U.S. National Climate Assessment is an important step toward fulfilling the goals of the Climate Action Plan President Obama laid out last June. The report reveals the many dangerous effects climate change is having and will continue to have on the different regions of our country – ranging from rising food prices, higher rates of asthma, and an increase in storms, droughts, and heat waves.
“Today’s report also provides a powerful call to action: we must address the emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. We could ignore the problem and continue polluting our air, importing carbon-based fossil fuels, and debating whether climate change is even real, but that would be irresponsible and short-sighted. We have a responsibility – not only to ourselves, but to future generations – to channel our actions into meaningful change. We must act to reduce carbon emissions through an all-of-the-above energy policy, achieve greater energy efficiency by deploying advanced energy technologies that create good jobs, and accept the irrefutable scientific evidence of humans’ effect on our changing climate.
“I am glad that the Obama Administration is continuing to make addressing climate change a priority, recognizing that its impact will be felt not only today but for decades to come. I hope Democrats and Republicans can work together in a bipartisan way to partner with the Administration to follow the rest of the steps the President outlined in June when he committed our country to a path forward toward a more sustainable future.”
