Hoyer Statement on April Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for April:
“The jobs report released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows an economy picking up steam and adding jobs at a steady pace, adding 273,000 private sector jobs in April and dropping the unemployment rate to 6.3%.
However, the work of encouraging job creation is not finished, and there is much Congress ought to do to speed up the pace of hiring and ensure that every American who seeks a job can find one.
“House Republicans have delayed for too long the necessary step of working with Democrats to pass Make It In America jobs legislation, which will boost economic competitiveness by adopting a national manufacturing strategy, promoting U.S. exports, encouraging businesses to bring jobs and innovation back to our shores, and training a twenty-first century workforce. Congress also has a responsibility to restore emergency unemployment insurance to the more than 2.8 million Americans who are struggling with long-term unemployment and have been cut off from this critical program. At the same time, it ought to move forward with legislation to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour so more workers and their families can afford middle-class opportunities such as homeownership, higher education, and the ability to save for retirement.
“I hope House Republicans will cease their obstruction and instead work with us in a bipartisan way to ensure that all Americans can access opportunities that support the American Dream.”
