I want to take a second to talk about what happened this week: On Monday, Republican Congressman Michael Grimm, who infamously threatened to throw a reporter off a balcony, surrendered to the FBI. The case includes allegations that Grimm denied his health food store workers a proper wage. On Tuesday, LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling was banned from the NBA for his reprehensible, racist rant. Yes, these are two very different stories -- but they both remind me of the powerful quote from Frederick Douglass: "Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." Whether it was those workers demanding a fair day's pay from Mr. Grimm, or a nation demanding that Mr. Sterling be removed, change happens -- but only when we demand it. So I'd like to thank you for all you've done to support me and help elect more Members of Congress that boldly speak truth to power. And I hope that you -- or someone you know -- will be inspired to fight for change in your own community. Applications are open now for our 2014 Organizing Corps. The program is devoted to training a new generation of diverse, relentless and inspired organizers across the nation. Will you apply -- or pass this email on to someone who inspires you?
