NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks ended the holiday-shortened week with solid gains, after four straight day of increases on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. The benchmark index traded sideways on Thursday as investors weighed a mixed bag of earnings results and generally positive economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the day slightly lower. U.S. markets are closed Friday for the Good Friday holiday. The S&P 500 ended the day 2.54 points, or 0.1%, higher at 1,864.85 and gained 2.7% over the past 4 days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 16.31 points, or 0.1%, lower at 16,408.54. The blue-chip index gained 2.4% over the past four days, recouping all of the losses from the previous week. The Nasdaq Composite added 9.29 points, or 0.2%, to 4,095.52.
