WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Manufacturing in the Philadelphia region showed signs of strengthening in April, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia reported Thursday. The Philly Fed diffusion index rose to 16.6 in April from 9.0 in March. This is the highest reading since last September. Readings above zero indicate expansion. The increase was much larger than expected. Economists were expecting the index to improve only to 10.0. Underneath the headline, most of the components of the index increased from their readings in March.
