Hoyer Statement on 65th Anniversary of the Founding of NATO WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the 65th anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): “On April 4, 1949, representatives from the United States and eleven other nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty, creating an enduring and powerful alliance – now twenty-eight members strong – to defend freedom and democracy in Europe and North America. For sixty-five years, NATO has stood firm both against Soviet aggression during the Cold War and against terrorism and instability since 1991. “After the attacks of September 11, NATO members rallied to America’s side and have played a central role in the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Today, NATO continues to promote international security through new partnerships and remains unified in the face of aggression that threatens regional peace and stability, including Russia’s illegal military incursion into Crimea in violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. I join in marking this anniversary and paying tribute to an alliance that continues to make our country and the world more secure.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
