Hoyer Statement on Afghan Elections WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the Afghan elections: “Tomorrow, millions of Afghans will go to the polls to choose their next president, and Afghan voters deserve a chance to cast ballots free from the threat of violence and in a credible process that meets international standards. The Afghan people have already demonstrated great courage in the face of violence and intimidation throughout the period of campaigning leading up to tomorrow’s election. “Democratic elections and the peaceful transfer of executive authority are a strong sign of progress for a country that has endured great hardships over the past two decades since the Taliban took power. Afghanistan’s election institutions have been working well so far and ought to be given the opportunity to carry out their responsibilities as the results are tallied. I look forward to working with Afghanistan’s next president to ensure that the growth and strengthening of the country’s democratic institutions continues – and that our troops can return home safely and with the knowledge that they have helped the Afghan people take important steps toward a peaceful and democratic future.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
