NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. stock market opened higher on Friday as investors cheered a surprisingly strong jobs report, which showed the fasted pace of jobs growth in three months. A better-than-expected data vindicates those who bid up the market to record levels on the belief that the cold weather had distorted past economic reports. The upbeat data is set to power the S&P 500 into record territory. The benchmark index gained 6.52 points, or 0.3%, to 1,883.37 at the open, above its previous closing record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened 62 points, or 0.4%, to 16,481.30. The Nasdaq Composite began the day 12.07 points, or 0.3%, higher at 4,367.26.
