Hoyer Statement on February Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for February:
“The monthly jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning demonstrates that, while our recovery continues, Congress must do more to help the private sector create jobs that pay well and open doors to opportunity. With 162,000 private sector jobs created in February, more must be done to add jobs at the pace we need in order to put all those who are still seeking employment back to work.
“Congress must take action now to spur private sector job growth, and the bipartisan Make It In America jobs plan is the best way to do so. With support from business, labor, economists, and the public, there is no reason why Congress should not move forward with consideration of Make It In America bills right away. At the same time, Congress has a responsibility to help those who have been out of work for an extended period by restoring the emergency unemployment insurance that provided them and their families with critical assistance as they search for work. We also should take swift action to raise the minimum wage to provide a boost to the lowest-paid workers and their families so they can better access the opportunities that lead to a secure place in our middle class.
"I hope House Republicans will drop their opposition to these efforts and work with us to continue moving our economic recovery forward."
