Hoyer Statement on the Anniversary of the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the anniversary of the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act being signed into law in 2013:
“One year ago today, I stood beside President Obama as he signed into law a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act that expanded on the protections afforded to victims of abuse and extended new safeguards to LGBT Americans, Native Americans, and immigrants. I was proud to cosponsor the original Violence Against Women Act in 1994, which has helped millions of Americans seek justice against perpetrators of domestic violence and stalking and access resources to help them heal. It has also provided law enforcement with important tools to combat violence against women and supported the work of victim services providers in communities throughout our country.
“While I would have liked to have seen the reauthorization move more quickly through the House last year, I was glad that Republicans finally joined unanimous Democratic support for the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization, and I will continue to support additional measures to prevent domestic violence and empower survivors of abuse to move forward with their lives without fear.”
