UPDATED: Hoyer Calls on Arizona Governor to Veto Discriminatory Bill WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today calling on Arizona Governor Jan Brewer to veto a discriminatory bill, S.B. 1062, passed by the Arizona state legislature: “Governor Brewer has an important decision to make this week on behalf of the diverse communities who call Arizona home, but it is not a difficult one. I join in calling on her to do the right thing and veto S.B. 1062 and, in doing so, uphold the principles to which our Founders held fast and which so many courageous Americans lost their lives to defend. “The First Amendment safeguards our freedom to practice our faiths freely, but it does not give any person the right to cite religion in order to justify intolerance toward their fellow Americans. This holds true whether the victim of such intolerance is gay or straight, black or white, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or the member of any group. Discrimination in any form is never acceptable anywhere in our country, and it violates our most fundamental values as a nation.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
