Hoyer Statement on Democratic Effort to Compel Vote to Raise the Minimum Wage WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after signing a discharge petition that would force a vote on H.R. 1010, the Fair Minimum Wage Act, to raise the minimum wage to $10.10: “In signing the discharge petition introduced by Rep. Tim Bishop to bring the Fair Minimum Wage Act to the Floor, I join with my colleagues in calling for a vote to raise the minimum wage without delay. The strong majority of Americans who support a wage increase for the lowest-paid workers in our country do so because they understand that a worker can no longer support a family or pursue the American Dream on just $7.25 an hour. The same is true for the more than 600 economists who have endorsed raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, which will increase workers’ purchasing power, strengthen our economy, and lift entire families out of poverty. I hope Republicans will join with Democrats in signing this discharge petition so we can bring the Fair Minimum Wage Act to the Floor for a vote right away.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
