Hoyer Statement on President Obama Executive Order Raising Minimum Wage for Federal Contract Workers
WASHINGTON, DC - House Demcratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Obama's executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $10.10:
“Today, President Obama took an important step toward making sure that every American who works hard can earn a living wage. By signing an executive order to raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers, he is fulfilling his promise in last month’s State of the Union address to take action within his authority in areas where Congress has failed to do so. I am glad that the President is also covering workers at fast food concessions in federal buildings under this order, which I and other Members of Congress requested he do in a letter yesterday. It is also an important step forward that this executive order ends the discriminatory practice of permitting federal contractors to pay their employees with disabilities less and ensures that all of these workers are treated equally.
“Right now, there is legislation that has been introduced in the House and Senate to raise the minimum wage for all American workers. I am proud to cosponsor the House bill because nobody who works full time in our country should have to live in poverty or struggle at poverty’s edge. I urge the House Republican leadership to join with Democrats to pass the Fair Minimum Wage Act without delay, which will benefit 28 million American workers and help them and their families access opportunities to secure a place in our middle class.”
