Hoyer Statement on Record U.S. Exports in 2013
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on today's announcement by the Department of Commerce that U.S. exports in 2013 set a new record:
“Today’s announcement by the Commerce Department that 2013 was a record year for U.S. exports is a strong indicator that if Congress were to move forward with Make It In America legislation, the benefits to our economy and job creation would be tremendous. With American businesses having exported $2.3 trillion worth of goods and services last year – helping to narrow our trade deficit to its lowest level since President Obama took office – there ought to be no doubt that people around the world still want to buy goods made right here in our communities.
“The Make It In America plan, which has support from Democrats and Republicans and was crafted in collaboration with representatives from both business and labor, includes as one of its four core components the promotion of U.S. exports. Legislation has already been introduced that would invest in upgrading our airport, seaport, highway, and freight rail infrastructure to facilitate the transport of American-made products to foreign markets more efficiently, ensure that fair trading rules are enforced, and provide targeted assistance so businesses can compete successfully in the global market.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance Make It In America legislation to the Floor this year so Congress can reaffirm its commitment to helping American businesses export their goods and, in the process, import more jobs that pay well and grow our middle class.”
