Hoyer Statement on President Obama's State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address:
“Tonight, President Obama challenged Congress to join him in taking action on the most pressing challenges we face as a nation. Foremost among those challenges remains preserving the American Dream by expanding access to the opportunities that have always made that dream possible. House Democrats will continue to make economic opportunity the centerpiece of our agenda for 2014, and we will keep pressing Republicans to set partisanship aside and join us in partnering with the President to achieve real results for the American people.
“As the President emphasized in his speech, strengthening domestic manufacturing and investing in education and skills training is central to promoting economic opportunity for more Americans. That’s what House Democrats’ Make It In America plan is all about: helping grow private sector jobs that pay well and open doors to the middle class, and the themes the President discussed are key components of that plan. Many Make It In America bills already have bipartisan support, and there is no reason to delay bringing them to the Floor for a vote.
“Expanding economic opportunity also means restoring emergency unemployment insurance, raising the minimum wage, and enacting comprehensive immigration reform that will secure our borders and provide those who are already living here with a path to citizenship. And a key component of expanding economic security continues to be improving access to quality, affordable health care through the Affordable Care Act, which is benefitting millions of Americans across the country.
“The State of our Union is strong, but it must continue to be strengthened. House Democrats are ready to work together to advance the pro-growth, pro-opportunity agenda the President shared with the nation this evening and to keep America and its allies safe. At the same time, Congress must work together to prevent an economy-stifling default crisis in February and strive for sustainable fiscal outcomes that provide certainty to businesses and families. I hope Republicans will set their partisan opposition aside and work with us to build a stronger, safer country and enable all Americas to find the economic security they deserve as part of our middle class.”
