WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Congress has less time than previously thought to pass legislation increasing the federal debt limit, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said Wednesday. In a Jan. 22 letter to Congressional leaders, Lew said extraordinary measures that keep the federal government from hitting the debt ceiling would be exhausted by the end of February. Previously, Lew had said the measures might extend into March. Experts said they think Congress will avoid hitting the debt ceiling but are still unsure exactly what the compromise will entail.
