Hoyer Statement on the Presidential Commission on Election Administration Report WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the report and recommendations released today from the Presidential Commission on Election Administration: "The surest way to strengthen our system of free and fair elections is for the 113th Congress to pass the Voting Rights Amendments Act, which was introduced with bipartisan support last week, without delay. In addition, policy makers, voting rights advocates, and election officials must join together to implement the common sense recommendations of today's report issued by the President's Commission on Election Administration to improve transparency, accountability, and accessibility. "I am encouraged that the members of the commission included calls to expand access to online voter registration, especially for military service members and their families posted overseas, and they are right too to urge the allocation of resources to local election administrators for the expansion of early voting opportunities. Access for voters with disabilities also ought to be made easier. Nobody should be forced to wait for hours to cast a ballot or endure cumbersome registration requirements. I hope Congress can act swiftly to build on the progress we made in 2002 with the Help America Vote Act and further protect Americans' most fundamental right."
