FTSE 100 closes out 2013 with a 14% gain
MADRID (MarketWatch) -- London stocks finished the 2013 trading year with a a 13.8% gain. The FTSE 100 index closed out Tuesday's session with a 0.3% rise to end at 6,749.09. Shares of Aberdeen Asset Management PLC led the gains with a 3% rise, while building-related stocks such as Land Securities Group PLC and The British Land Company PLC gained more than 1% each. Mining stocks fell across the board, while retailers such as Marks & Spencer Group PLC and J Sainsbury PLC finished down 2.3% and 1.6%, respectively. For 2013, shares of International Consolidated Airlines Group PLC had the best performance at a gain of 112%, while easyJet PLC was second with a 100% gain. Mining stocks were the year's worst performers as precious and base metals prices fell. For 2013, Fresnillo PLC topoped the decliner's list with a drop of nearly 60% and Randgold Resources Ltd fell 36%.
