Hoyer Statement on Beginning of Health Care Coverage for Millions of Americans Through Affordable Care Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the new health care coverage going into effect today for more than six million Americans through the Affordable Care Act:
“Today, millions of Americans are beginning the new year with the security that comes from having access to quality, affordable health care. While there is still work to be done, since October 1, more than 2.1 million Americans have enrolled in new private health insurance plans through federal and state marketplaces, taking full advantage of the savings and protections the Affordable Care Act offers.
“Starting today, the nearly 129 million Americans living with pre-existing conditions no longer have to worry about being denied coverage, and millions of uninsured and underinsured Americans now have options for coverage through the marketplaces or Medicaid. American families will no longer be burdened with arbitrary annual caps on their benefits, and coverage is now comprehensive, with plans offering a range of essential health benefits that include mental health services.
“When Congress reconvenes next week, it is my hope that Republicans will work with Democrats to implement this law rather than continuing their focus on repealing its important patient protections and cost-saving reforms. Millions of Americans have already begun to benefit from the Affordable Care Act, and I hope that we can work together to ensure that millions more experience these benefits as well."
