Hoyer Statement on First Meeting of Farm Bill Conference Committee WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the first meeting of the conference committee that is working to negotiate a farm bill: “Today, House and Senate conferees will begin negotiations on a farm bill – negotiations Democrats have been requesting for months. I strongly urge the conferees to produce legislation that supports economic and jobs growth in rural America while protecting critical Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding for low-income families. The partisan, Republican version of the farm bill that passed the House earlier this year cut nearly $40 billion in SNAP funding, a program that helps tens of millions of Americans avoid hunger, including millions of children, seniors, and veterans. In a country as wealthy as ours, no American should have to endure malnutrition or go to bed hungry. Conferees ought to continue the long tradition of producing bipartisan farm bills that both protect Americans from hunger and support our nation’s farmers as they produce the safest, most abundant, and most affordable food in the world. “The farm bill expired on September 30. We have no time to waste in enacting a new farm bill to provide certainty to farmers and consumers. I am glad that several Republican Members have joined Democrats in calling for final action on the farm bill before the end of the year, and I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to achieve that goal.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
