Travel of Ambassador Melanne S. Verveer to Jordan

Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer will travel to Jordan from June 24 – 27, 2012. While in Amman, Ambassador Verveer will host a regional convening of the Working Group on Women’s Empowerment. Under the Secretary’s Strategic Dialogue with Civil Society, the Working Group will bring together female NGO, business, and academic leaders from across the Middle East and North Africa to discuss how to further women’s political and economic engagement in the region. After hosting the Working Group, she will meet with Her Majesty Queen Rania, Jordanian Government officials, and representatives from civil society, business, and the media, to discuss specific steps to address efforts in Jordan to increase women’s engagement in politics, the economy, and society at large. The Ambassador will also discuss Jordan’s participation in the G8’s Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiative, a forum bringing together governments and civil society representatives to discuss solving the pressing issues in the region. The United States co-chairs the Initiative this year with Tunisia and the themes are Women’s Empowerment, Freedom of Expression, and Economic Governance.
