German parties reach agreement on new president from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel's governing coalition and the country's main opposition parties reached an agreement late Sunday to elect Joachim Gauck, a former East German human-rights activist, as the nation's next head of state. The quick decision followed the resignation Friday of Christian Wulff, who left the largely ceremonial office amid an investigation into accusations he accepted improper financial favors while serving as governor of the state of Lower Saxony. Gauck, 72, is well-known in Germany for his role in overseeing the opening of the files held on German citizens by the former East Germany's Stasi secret police after reunification in 1990.
