Travel of Ambassador Melanne S. Verveer to China

Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, will travel to Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai, China from November 8-15, 2011.
In Beijing, Ambassador Verveer will lead a delegation of partners from the U.S. government, civil society, and private sector partners to the International Forum on Women and Sustainable Development, where she will also deliver remarks. The Forum is sponsored by the All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF) in preparation for the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. Ambassador Verveer will also attend the second bilateral dialogue of the U.S.-China Women’s Leadership Exchange and Dialogue (Women-LEAD) initiative. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and China State Councilor Liu Yandong launched Women-LEAD as part of the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE). Ambassador Verveer will also meet with women leaders across all sectors of Chinese society.
In Chengdu, Ambassador Verveer will visit the campus of the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics to address and meet with the graduates of Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Women initiative which provides business and management education for underserved women entrepreneurs in developing and emerging markets. She will meet with academic leaders and local civil society representatives working on environmental, labor and gender issues. Finally, Ambassador Verveer will travel to villages affected by the 2008 earthquake, and meet with local women farmers, entrepreneurs and artisans.
In Shanghai, Ambassador Verveer will deliver the opening keynote address to the Financial Times Women at the Top Conference on November 15 regarding women’s role in the economy. During her stay, Ambassador Verveer will host a roundtable of women leaders from the business and NGO communities and visit an organization working with migrant women.
